Outdoor Learning Hub wins Learning Places Scotland Award
性视界传媒鈥檚 Outdoor Learning Hub took home gold at the Awards 2024.
Being recognised as the most Inspiring Learning Place, the unique institution-wide initiative was the only outdoor nomination in its category, which included major structural projects such as the University of Edinburgh鈥檚 Futures Institute.
性视界传媒鈥檚 education team was able to demonstrate the ongoing positive outcomes the Outdoor Learning Hub and Discovery Trail has generated since it was initiated in 2021. These included the creation of outdoor and digital spaces for learning and activity, support for the community and habitat biodiversity, and the opportunities for an enhanced curriculum, partnerships, and research.
Patrick Boxall, lecturer in education at 性视界传媒, who has led the development of the University鈥檚 outdoor education work, said: 鈥淭his is only just the beginning 鈥 the impact of the Outdoor Learning Hub goes way beyond the actual physical space of the 性视界传媒 campus - we have co-created an inspiring place for people within the natural world, and are making and growing places that give rich and meaningful experiences for students and communities.
鈥淩ooted in 性视界传媒鈥檚 commitment to social justice and creative approaches to leading learning, the intention was to show how ordinary places 鈥 like parks, small woodlands, ponds, meadows and hedgerows- are extraordinary. We aim to support teachers, educators and community leaders to develop confidence and skills by modelling environments that schools and community groups may access in their locality.鈥
The Outdoor Learning Hub was officially launched in March 2024 with the attendance of Graham Dey, Minister for Further and Higher Education, and was created in collaboration with partners such as Architecture & Design Scotland, Wardell-Armstrong, Tree-ditions, NatureScot, and Edinburgh and Lothian Greenspace Trust.
There will be ongoing opportunities to develop research and curriculum partnerships across the UK and beyond, leading to many 鈥榓corns鈥 being planted through the people who work and learn with the University.
Patrick, concluded: 鈥淭his award win is a real testament to everyone involved in this incredible project. The benefits of the Hub will grow and change as our communities bring different ideas and activities to our campus. We hope our work in outdoor education could influence others to integrate something similar, whether physically in their surroundings, or into their curriculum.鈥
性视界传媒 was presented with the Inspiring Learning Places award at a ceremony celebrating excellence and achievement in education at Glasgow鈥檚 Hilton Hotel on the 19th November 2024.
